Afternoon TEA: Affordable Energy Made The Vaccine Possible

We are all aware of the rapid development of the COVID-19 vaccine, but according to a recent article by Manhattan Institute Senior Fellow Mark P. Mills, “One of the least noted aspects of that story is the carbon footprint associated with the vaccination ecosystem.”
Medical researchers used powerful supercomputers to help design the vaccine—“the top ten of those powerful machines boast a collective energy appetite equaling 2 million Teslas.” The pharmaceutical manufacturers producing the vaccine are a much more energy-intensive industry than other manufacturing—using more energy than the U.S. semiconductor industry. And, the vaccine will be delivered around the world by jumbo jets fueled by oil and stored in huge refrigeration warehouses.
This is all a beautiful illustration of the life-saving accomplishments made possible by affordable and reliable energy. If dangerous schemes to “decarbonize” like the Green New Deal were in place, we likely would not be able to develop and distribute the COVID-19 vaccine as we have.
