Across the country Americans are enjoying a break as gasoline prices hover around or even below the $3 per gallon mark. That price is nearly 20 cents cheaper than prices at the pump just a year ago. And, it is a welcome relief from the $5 per gallon prices we were facing in 2022.

So, why are gas prices coming down now?

• Gas prices tend to come down this time of year. Many states switch over to a “winter-blend” of gasoline that is slightly cheaper than its summer counterpart. And, demand is lower when Americans drive less in the winter months as opposed to the summer’s peak driving season.
• So far this winter has seen milder temperatures which lowers the demand for home heating fuel—a heating energy source that is distilled from petroleum like the gasoline that fuels our cars.
• U.S. oil production reached record highs this fall despite—not because of—the anti-American energy policies of the Biden Administration. This allows for greater energy independence so we are not at the mercy of OPEC manipulating the prices that Americans pay to fill their tanks

It is true, there are so many factors that cause gas prices to move up or down a few cents. But, it’s the huge price surges that we saw over the last couple years that are the fault and responsibility of bad policies from short-sighted, politically-charged leadership. The beginning of President Biden’s first term was jam packed with those kinds of decisions.

And, while he may have let up on some of his green-at-any-cost policies, you can safely assume that that is an election year tactic. Four more years of a lame duck presidency will only empower the Green New Dealers in his administration to double down on blocking American oil and gas while driving up costs at the pumps.
