AFTERNOON TEA
Environmental Protection or $elf Enrichment?
This week, we’re continuing our TEA series exposing the “green” groups working to influence the November election. Last summer, four major environmental groups gave Biden an early endorsement in an attempt to shore up “green” votes for the embattled president. But, who are these groups really?
NextGen—bankrolled by liberal billionaire Tom Steyer—has evolved to champion quite a few liberal causes besides the environment. NextGen’s mission is “to empower young voters to engage in the political process and ensure our government is responsive to the largest and most diverse generation in American history.”
Here’s some other facts about NextGen:
- NextGen has partnered on election activities with liberal organizations like SEIU International and Planned Parenthood, as well as several Hollywood celebrities.
- One of NextGen’s original initiatives was killing the Keystone XL pipeline. All the way back in 2015, Steyer attacked members of Congress who supported the pipeline and praised the Obama Administration for rejecting it. No wonder Steyer’s group is now promising to bankroll Biden’s re-election—ending the pipeline once and for all was one of his first acts of office.
- NextGen spent tens of millions of dollars on a ballot measure in Arizona that would have required electric utilities in the state to generate at least half of their power from renewable sources by 2030. When the measure failed by huge margins, Steyer’s group spent even more money attacking state officials and utilities.
Americans are going to be blasted with a lot of political noise in the coming months, and it can be a challenge to make sense of it all. For years, Steyer’s NextGen has been pushing policies that would raise energy costs for everyday American families. Now, they are among groups betting early on another four years of Biden’s costly energy policies.
