UN’s Green New Scam Targets Shipping

October 17, 2025

Need to know

Common sense

LNG SHIP PENALTY NIXED: The Trump administration wisely scrapped penalties for US liquefied natural gas companies that were set to take effect next week, under a sweeping policy aimed at curbing China’s maritime dominance.

The provision, which is effective immediately, will avoid potential short-term disruptions to the LNG sector while promoting investments in U.S. shipbuilding capacity and production of LNG vessels.

Why it matters: American LNG companies warned that existing shipbuilding capacity in the US is not equipped to churn out specialized LNG tankers, which are mainly built in South Korea and Japan.

This is critical as we continue to lead the world in exporting natural gas. That is due to several key reasons — a combination of geological abundance, infrastructure, policy, and global demand dynamics.

Consider:

  • Abundant Natural Gas Reserves: The U.S. has vast shale gas reserves, especially from fields like the Marcellus, Permian, and Haynesville basins. Thanks to the fracking boom (hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling), the U.S. became the world’s largest natural gas producer, enabling surplus production well beyond domestic needs.

  • Massive LNG Export Infrastructure: The U.S. invested heavily in LNG export terminals over the past decade. New terminals and expansions are ongoing, increasing export capacity.

  • Growing Demand: After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Europe slashed Russian gas imports and turned to U.S. LNG. Demand is also growing in Asia, especially in countries like Japan, South Korea, India, and China.

There’s a supportive regulatory environment for energy exports, and U.S. export terminals have access to both Atlantic and Pacific markets. The Panama Canal enables LNG shipments to Asia more efficiently from the Gulf Coast.

Bottom line: The proposed penalties on LNG companies would’ve dampened the U.S. LNG boom and kneecapped American energy dominance. The Trump admin was smart to correct course.

Nonsense

THE U.N. WANTS TO TAX YOU: We’ve all heard about taxation without representation, dating back to studying the American Revolution. Now, two and a half centuries later, the United Nations thinks it can impose a global tax on carbon emissions.

Voters are opposing the net zero climate agenda far and wide. Yet that isn’t stopping the U.N., according to this Wall Street Journal piece.

The International Maritime Organization, a U.N. body based in London, hopes at its meeting this week to secure final approval for its “net-zero framework” for shipping. In the 11th hour, Trump administration officials are considering all options to block this tax from taking effect, even though the measure is expected to pass by a two-thirds vote.

Why it matters: This could cost roughly $10-12 billion annually. If you’ve heard about this at all, it’s probably because the Trump administration last week threatened to slap sanctions on any country that votes in favor of imposing this tax.

This isn’t a new idea — but it’s a first for a global power grab. Once again, the ill-gotten scam of spending our money to save the planet.

Back in 2021 President Joe Biden toyed with the idea of a carbon tax to advance his green-at-any-cost agenda. Thank goodness it didn’t come to fruition.

Fortunately, we have a president who sees the fatal flaw in this tax and will fight to prevent its implementation. Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on X that our leadership staunchly opposes the U.N.’s attempt at taxing American citizens.

Consider:

  • Global shipping costs would increase by an estimated 10 percent.
  • A carbon tax ultimately drives up the cost of everything from food to fuel, thereby hurting millions of working American families.
  • This TEA factsheet shows in more detail the damage that such a draconian measure would cause.

Finally, the IMO carbon tax would be paid by ship owners directly into a new “Net Zero Fund” created by the agency.

This opens the door to global corruption disguised as climate action. Europe may follow blindly, but America will stand firm.

Bottom line: The U.S. is a firm “NO” on the UN’s carbon tax. We won’t bow to green schemes from unelected, unaccountable globalist organizations.

A look ahead

Hearing On Pipeline Safety: On Tuesday, October 21, the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee will have a hearing to enhance the safety of pipeline transportation.

Hearing On STEM Education: On Tuesday, October 21, the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee will have a hearing to establish a National STEM Week to promote American innovation and enhance STEM education pathways for all students.

Quote of the week

“I am outraged that the International Maritime Organization is voting in London this week to pass a global Carbon Tax. The United States will NOT stand for this Global Green New Scam Tax on Shipping, and will not adhere to it in any way, shape, or form. We will not tolerate increased prices on American Consumers OR, the creation of a Green New Scam Bureaucracy to spend YOUR money on their Green dreams. Stand with the United States, and vote NO in London tomorrow!”

— President Donald Trump in a statement posted to Truth Social.
