Stabbing allies in the back

In the latest election year maneuver, the Biden Administration is now acting to restrict liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. While Biden’s green-at-any-cost bureaucrats will tell you this is a policy decision, it is actually pandering to extreme, left-wing voters that Biden is scrambling to win back before November.

On Friday, the Administration announced it was freezing the approval process of new plants to export U.S. LNG. The fact is U.S. LNG is a key to our energy independence at home and energy dominance abroad. It keeps America and her allies safe:

  • The United States became a net natural gas exporter in 2017 for the first time since 1957. U.S. exports of natural gas set a record high in the first half of 2023.
  • Prior to its war against Ukraine, Russia supplied 40% of the natural gas imported by the European Union. Since then, it has been American LNG that has filled the gap and allowed us to support our allies during this crisis. If new U.S. LNG projects are blocked, Europe and Asia will have to import gas from elsewhere to meet their growing demand. Most won’t come from America’s friends, and it will not be produced with the environmentally conscious methods that natural gas is produced with in the U.S.
  • Biden’s actions will only undermine our allies and world security, along with good paying American jobs. A Department of Energy study found that, “U.S. LNG exports will continue to stabilize the domestic market and incentivize U.S. natural gas production, which in turn generates billions of dollars in new investments that benefit local communities, produce tax revenues and support jobs, including those in manufacturing.” Biden’s war on America’s energy started on day one in office by shutting down the nearly completed Keystone XL pipeline, which could have created almost 60,000 new jobs. Biden’s crowning legislative achievement is the trillion-dollar Inflation Reduction Act that dumps money into so-called green energy while hurting American families like the 62% of Americans who live paycheck to paycheck.

A ban on America LNG exports is just one more example of Biden’s damaging anti-American energy agenda. Americans lose on jobs and prosperity. And, our nation and the world will be less safe than they are today. At a time when our allies require America to have their backs, the Biden administration — with threats such as this — is stabbing them in the back.
