Ringing in the New Year also rings in our next big U.S. election year. As the season of campaigning ramps up, you’re likely to hear a lot noise about affordable energy issues. And, while it is very important to weigh what politicians are saying, it’s also very important to remember what they have done—and during the first years of Biden’s presidency he did A LOT:

  • Gasoline prices may have come down recently, but not too long ago we were staring at record high prices at the pump. In the summer of 2022, gasoline prices were near or above $5 a gallon for many Americans—the highest they had been since 2014.
  • And, remember when they wanted to ban your kitchen gas stoves? Well, they are still coming for your appliances. The Department of Energy recently finalized new standards for residential refrigerators and freezers, and proposed standards for commercial fans and blowers. An Alliance for Consumers analysis, found that recent energy regulations from by the Biden administration could make water heaters cost $2,800 more, gas stoves as much as $3,250 more, air conditioners $1,100 more expensive and gas furnaces $500 more.
  • In the first year of Biden’s presidency, utility gas prices for home heating and appliance increased by nearly 30 percent. Those underlying energy cost increases helped spike inflation to the highest levels we’d seen in generations.

As President Biden shifts into campaign mode this year he will no doubt start saying what he thinks voters focused on affordable energy want to hear. But talk is cheap while his actions have been beyond costly for American families trying to make ends meet. If Biden’s policies were this damaging in his first term, imagine what will happen if he’s reelected to a lame-duck second term with little if any political consequences for his actions.

Americans can’t afford another four years of green-at-any-cost energy policies. For more information about common-sense policies for clean, affordable and reliable American energy, check out The Empowerment Alliance.
