As we head into the holiday shopping season and chilly winter weather, this is the time of year that many American families feel the strain of trying to stretch their budgets. This season brings all sorts of added costs, including higher energy bills. And, unfortunately due to inflation, the many things still cost so much more than they were just a short few years ago.

But, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, there is one positive on the winter horizon. The nearly half of U.S. households that use natural gas to heat their homes this winter will likely spend over 20 percent less than last year.

Natural gas is also the reliable heating source American families need during the cold winter months. A March 2019 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research concluded that low prices due to America’s abundant supply of natural gas averted 11,000 winter deaths per year in the U.S..

American natural gas is making the holidays a bit brighter this year, but we need to continue moving forward. And, that’s why we need leadership and policies that allow American families to access clean, affordable and reliable American energy sources, like natural gas. And, we need those policies more than ever during the long winter months when that access can literally be a matter of life or death.
